Bridgeport sits where Fairfield County meets Long Island Sound, and the tornadoes that have crossed this stretch of coastal Connecticut have come chiefly in high summer, spun up by warm-season thunderstorms; July and August dates recur throughout the city's tornado history, with a secondary cluster in late May and June.
On July 10, 1989, an F4 tornado tore a 3-mile path about 100 yards wide through the area, injuring 40 people and causing $275 million in property damage. Decades earlier, on July 14, 1950, an F2 tracked 5 miles, injuring three people and causing $275,000 in damage, and another F2 touched down on October 24, 1955.
Recent years have brought weaker but still disruptive tornadoes. EF1 tornadoes struck on May 15, 2018, and that autumn an EF1 on October 2, 2018 was followed by an EF0 the next day. An EF1 hit on August 27, 2020, an EF0 arrived unusually late in the season on November 13, 2021, and an EF0 passed through the area on August 13, 2023.
