Ansonia sits along the Naugatuck River in New Haven County, in the lower valley towns of southern Connecticut, and the tornadoes that have touched this area have come overwhelmingly in the heat of summer, when humid air masses fuel strong afternoon thunderstorms across the region.
On July 10, 1989, an F4 tornado carved a 3-mile path through the area, injuring 40 people and causing $275,000,000 in property damage; an F2 that same day injured 70 more and did $27,500,000 in damage. A generation earlier, on May 24, 1962, an F3 tracked 11.6 miles through the region, killing one person, injuring 50, and causing $2,750,000 in property damage.
Recent decades have generally brought tornadoes at the lower end of the scale: EF1s crossed the area on July 21, 2010, and again on May 15, 2018. The calendar is not confined to midsummer, either — an F2 touched down on October 24, 1955, and EF0 tornadoes were confirmed on November 13, 2021, well past the usual storm season.
