The early 1950s were turbulent here. On August 21, 1951, an F2 tornado tore a 43.9-mile path 100 yards wide across the region, injuring nine people and causing $275,000 in property damage; an F3 touched down the same day, injuring eight more. An F3 returned on May 10, 1954, injuring two. Two decades later, on September 6, 1973, an F2 tracked 3.3 miles and inflicted $2,750,000 in property damage.
Recent tornadoes have generally been weaker, but they keep coming, and not strictly in midsummer.
