Willimantic sits among the river valleys and low hills of Windham County in eastern Connecticut, and the tornadoes documented around the city have clustered heavily in the warm months, from midsummer into early fall.
Several damaging tornadoes struck decades ago. On August 21, 1951, an F2 tornado tracked 43.9 miles on a path about 100 yards wide and injured nine people, while an F3 that touched down the same day injured eight. Another F3 struck on May 10, 1954, injuring two, and on September 6, 1973, an F2 carved a 3.3-mile path and caused $2,750,000 in property damage.
More recent decades have brought generally weaker tornadoes. An EF1 moved through the area on June 26, 2009, and another on July 10, 2013. The summer and fall of 2018 produced EF0 touchdowns on July 17, August 4, and October 2, and an EF1 followed on September 4, 2019.
