Westport sits where the Saugatuck River meets Long Island Sound in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and the tornadoes that have touched this stretch of coast are warm-season storms, clustering from mid-May into early October and most often in high summer.
An F2 tornado struck on July 14, 1950, running a 5-mile path roughly 100 yards wide, injuring 3 people and causing $275,000 in property damage. Another F2 passed on July 19, 1971, along a far narrower 1.5-mile track. On June 12, 1991, an F0 turned deadly despite its modest rating, killing 1 person along a 0.7-mile path. And on July 12, 2006, an F2 carved a 10.1-mile path up to 300 yards wide, injuring 6 people.
The area has also seen a series of lighter touchdowns in recent years: EF1 tornadoes on May 15, 2018, and again on October 2, 2018, followed by an EF0 on October 3, 2018, and another EF0 on August 4, 2020. Earlier EF1s came on May 16, 2007, July 31, 2009, and June 24, 2010.
