Waterford sits on Connecticut's southeastern shoreline in New London County, where the Thames River meets Long Island Sound, and the tornadoes documented around it have come mostly in the warm months. An F0 tornado touched down on September 8, 1958, and another F0 followed on August 29, 1959. An F1 struck on July 19, 1963, another F1 on June 27, 1974, and an F0 passed through on August 1, 1983.
July 1, 1998 brought a concentrated day of activity, with tornadoes rated F1 and F0 striking the area. An F1 followed on September 15, 2000, and an EF1 touched down on July 31, 2009, keeping to the summer-and-early-fall timing of the earlier events.
Later events have pushed deeper into the calendar. On October 29, 2018, an EF1 and an EF0 touched down in the region, and on November 13, 2021, an EF1 tracked through the area. Those late-October and mid-November dates fall well outside the June-through-September window that held for the earlier events. The pattern returned to late summer on August 18, 2023, when an EF1 tornado struck this corner of New London County.
