About Tornadoes in Wallingford Center

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Wallingford Center sits in the Quinnipiac River valley of New Haven County, along the central Connecticut corridor between New Haven and Hartford, and the tornadoes documented in its vicinity have come overwhelmingly on humid days in July and August.

July 10, 1989 was one such day: an F4 tornado carved a three-mile path 100 yards wide, injuring 40 people and causing $275 million in property damage, while an F2 the same day injured 70 along a five-mile track. Decades earlier, on May 24, 1962, a deadly F3 traveled 11.6 miles, killing one person and injuring 50. And on August 21, 1951, an F2 tracked 43.9 miles across the region and injured nine people, the same day an F3 briefly touched down and injured eight.

Later events have tended toward the lower end of the scale. EF1 tornadoes touched down on July 21, 2010 and again on May 15, 2018, and an EF1 and an EF0 struck on August 27, 2020. Nor is the threat strictly a summer affair: an F2 and an F1 struck on October 24, 1955, and EF0 tornadoes touched down on November 13, 2021, well after the leaves had turned.
