Wallingford sits in New Haven County, in the Quinnipiac River valley of central Connecticut, and most of the tornadoes in its history have arrived in the heart of summer. On July 10, 1989, a destructive F4 tornado tore a three-mile path through the area, injuring 40 people and causing $275,000,000 in property damage, while an F2 the same day tracked five miles and injured 70 more.
Earlier decades brought severe strikes of their own. On May 24, 1962, a deadly F3 carved an 11.6-mile path, killing one person and injuring 50. On August 21, 1951, an F2 ran a 43.9-mile track and a brief F3 touched down the same day, injuring 9 and 8 people respectively.
Tornadoes have continued into the modern era at lower intensities: EF1 tornadoes moved through on July 21, 2010, EF1s struck again on May 15, 2018, and an EF0 crossed the area on June 21, 2024.
