About Tornadoes in Trumbull

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Trumbull occupies the wooded hills of Fairfield County in southwestern Connecticut, a few miles inland from Long Island Sound, and the tornadoes that have touched the surrounding area are creatures of the warm season, concentrated in the humid stretch from late May through August.

July 10, 1989 shows what that season can deliver here. That day an F4 tornado carved a three-mile path about 100 yards wide, injuring 40 people and causing $275 million in property damage, while an F2 on the same date ran five miles, injured 70, and did $27.5 million in damage. Decades earlier, on May 24, 1962, an F3 tracked 11.6 miles through the region, killing one person, injuring 50, and leaving $2.75 million in damage. The summer pattern reaches back to an F2 that struck on July 14, 1950, injuring three people along a five-mile path, and another F3 hit on July 29, 1971, injuring two along a short but intense track.

More recent chapters have skewed weaker. EF1 tornadoes struck the area on May 15, 2018, and another EF1 followed on October 2, 2018; EF0 tornadoes touched down on November 13, 2021, strikingly late in the year for Connecticut; and an EF0 crossed the area on August 13, 2023.
