Torrington lies among the Litchfield Hills of northwestern Connecticut, where the Naugatuck River valley threads through Litchfield County. Tornadoes in this corner of the state belong mostly to the warm season, spun from summer thunderstorm complexes crossing the hills in June, July, and August — though October has produced them too.
On October 3, 1979, an F4 tornado carved an 11.3-mile path up to 1,400 yards wide through the area, killing 3 people, injuring 500, and causing $275,000,000 in property damage. Earlier decades saw violent weather as well: an F3 on May 24, 1962 tracked 11.6 miles, killing 1 person and injuring 50, and an F2 on August 21, 1951 stayed on the ground for 43.9 miles, injuring 9. On July 10, 1989, F2 tornadoes struck twice in a single day — one injuring 70 people, the other 4, each causing $27,500,000 in property damage.
