Stratford occupies the Connecticut shoreline where the Housatonic River meets Long Island Sound, in Fairfield County, and the tornadoes that have touched down within a short drive of town have mostly been creatures of high summer, spun out of humid July and August thunderstorms.
One July in particular shows what those storms can deliver: on July 10, 1989, a violent F4 tornado carved a three-mile path roughly 100 yards wide through the area, injuring 40 people and causing $275 million in property damage. Earlier generations weathered damaging tornadoes as well. On July 14, 1950, an F2 tracked five miles and injured three people, and another F2 touched down on October 24, 1955.
Recent decades have brought weaker but still disruptive tornadoes. EF1 tornadoes struck twice on May 15, 2018, and again that autumn on October 2, 2018, proof that the local season can stretch well past summer. A pair of EF0 tornadoes followed on November 13, 2021, deep into the fall, and another EF0 crossed the area on August 13, 2023.
