About Tornadoes in Storrs

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Storrs sits among the wooded hills of Tolland County in northeastern Connecticut, and the tornadoes documented around town have mostly been creatures of high summer, spinning up when hot, humid air pushes into New England in July and August. Many entries are brief F0 and F1 touchdowns, but the area's history includes far more dangerous storms.

On October 3, 1979, an F4 tornado carved an 11.3-mile path up to 1,400 yards wide through the region, killing three people, injuring 500, and causing $275 million in property damage. Decades earlier, on August 21, 1951, an F2 tracked 43.9 miles across the countryside and injured nine people, while an F3 that same day injured eight. More recently, on June 1, 2011, an EF3 with a 37.58-mile path tore across the region, killing three and injuring 200; additional EF1 tornadoes touched down nearby that same day.

The season runs long in this corner of Connecticut. An EF0 struck on October 2, 2018, and another touched down as late in the year as November 13, 2021. Activity has continued since, with EF1 tornadoes on August 18, 2023, and September 13, 2023.
