About Tornadoes in Stamford

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Stamford sits on the Long Island Sound shoreline in Fairfield County, at Connecticut's southwestern corner, and the tornadoes documented around the city have mostly been warm-season storms — spun up by July and August thunderstorm complexes, with occasional early-autumn arrivals.

On July 14, 1950, an F2 tornado carved a 5-mile path about 100 yards wide, injuring three people and causing $275,000 in property damage. The early 1970s brought a run of comparable storms, with F2 tornadoes striking on July 16, 1970, September 27, 1970, and July 19, 1971. Even weak circulations here have proven dangerous: an F0 tornado on June 12, 1991, killed one person along a 0.7-mile track.

On July 12, 2006, an F2 tornado tracked 10.1 miles with a width of 300 yards, injuring six people. The summer of 2010 brought another burst of activity, including an EF1 on July 25, 2010, that injured seven people, and an EF1 on September 16, 2010, that killed one person, injured another, and caused $17,200,000 in damage along a 4-mile path. Later activity has pushed deeper into autumn, with EF1 tornadoes touching down on October 2, 2018, and an EF0 arriving as late as November 13, 2021 — a reminder that the season for these storms along the Connecticut coast is not confined to midsummer.
