Southington lies in Hartford County, in the Quinnipiac River valley of central Connecticut, and the town's tornado history includes days of genuine violence. On October 3, 1979, an F4 tornado carved an 11.3-mile path up to 1,400 yards wide, killing 3 people, injuring 500, and causing $275 million in property damage. A decade later, on July 10, 1989, another F4 tracked 3 miles and injured 40, while F2 tornadoes that same day injured 70 more and dealt heavy damage of their own. Earlier generations weathered destructive storms as well: an F3 on May 24, 1962 killed 1 person and injured 50 along an 11.6-mile track, and an F2 on August 21, 1951 traveled 43.9 miles and injured 9.
