South Windsor sits on the flat farmland east of the Connecticut River in Hartford County, and the tornado history around town runs from brief touchdowns to genuinely destructive storms. On October 3, 1979, an F4 tornado carved an 11.3-mile path as much as 1,400 yards wide through the area, killing 3 people, injuring 500, and causing $275 million in property damage. A generation earlier, an F3 on May 24, 1962 killed 1 person and injured 50 along an 11.6-mile track, and on August 21, 1951 an F2 stayed on the ground for 43.9 miles, injuring 9.
