Seymour sits along the Naugatuck River in western New Haven County, Connecticut, where tornadoes have historically arrived with the humid thunderstorm days of high summer, clustering in July and August.
The afternoon of July 10, 1989, brought a violent F4 tornado that tore a three-mile path through the area and injured 40 people, while F2 tornadoes moving through that same day compounded the destruction — one injured 70 people along a five-mile track, and another injured four on a ten-mile run. Earlier storms left their own marks on the valley: on May 24, 1962, a deadly F3 killed one person and injured 50 as it carved an 11.6-mile path, and on August 21, 1951, an F2 stayed on the ground for a 43.9-mile track, injuring nine.
