Plainville lies in Hartford County, on the flat valley floor of central Connecticut, and the tornadoes documented around it cluster heavily in the humid weeks of June, July, and August, when summer thunderstorms sweep into southern New England.
The area's history includes genuinely destructive events. On October 3, 1979, an F4 tornado cut an 11.3-mile path as much as 1,400 yards wide, killing three people, injuring 500, and causing $275 million in property damage. On July 10, 1989, another F4 struck the area, injuring 40 people and causing $275 million in damage, on an afternoon when F2 tornadoes also touched down nearby, one of them injuring 70. Years earlier, on May 24, 1962, a deadly F3 tracked 11.6 miles, killing one person and injuring 50.
The EF-scale era has brought its own touchdowns: multiple EF1 tornadoes on July 21, 2010, EF1s again on May 15, 2018, and an EF0 on June 21, 2024.
