Plainfield lies in Windham County, in the rolling hills of eastern Connecticut's Quinebaug River valley near the Rhode Island line, and its tornado history is concentrated in the humid heart of summer, when July, August, and September thunderstorms occasionally turn severe.
An F2 tornado struck on August 7, 1986, injuring 20 people along a 4-mile path that widened to 1,000 yards and causing $2,750,000 in property damage; an F1 followed on August 8, 1986. Decades earlier, an F2 touched down on August 20, 1951, cutting a brief track a tenth of a mile long and 50 yards wide that did $27,500 in damage.
The pattern has continued into the Enhanced Fujita era. An EF1 struck on July 10, 2013, and EF0s touched down on July 17 and August 4, 2018.
