Norwich sits at the head of the Thames River in New London County, where the Yantic and Shetucket valleys converge in southeastern Connecticut. An F3 tornado struck the area on August 21, 1951, injuring 8 people and causing $275,000 in property damage along a path a tenth of a mile long and roughly 10 yards wide — brief and narrow, but destructive.
For decades afterward, tornadoes around Norwich arrived chiefly in the warm months: F1 touchdowns on July 19, 1963, August 17, 1968, and June 27, 1974; an F1 on September 18, 1973; an F0 on August 1, 1983; an F1 on July 14, 1992; and an F0 on July 10, 1993. On July 1, 1998, tornadoes rated F1 and F0 both touched down on the same day.
More recently, an EF1 struck on July 10, 2013, and the tornado season here has stretched deeper into autumn.
