Tornadoes reach Norwalk and the surrounding stretch of coastal Fairfield County most often in high summer, when thunderstorms push inland off Long Island Sound. On July 12, 2006, an F2 tornado carved a 10.1-mile path up to 300 yards wide through the area, injuring six people. The region had seen long-track damage before: an F2 on July 14, 1950 ran five miles, injured three people, and caused $275,000 in property damage, and another F2 touched down on July 19, 1971.
Weaker tornadoes near Norwalk have still proven dangerous. An F0 on June 29, 1990 injured seven people along a path of just 0.2 miles, and an F0 on June 12, 1991 turned deadly, killing one person along a 0.7-mile track.
The more recent EF-scale era has brought a steady run of lower-end events — an EF1 on May 16, 2007, another on July 31, 2009, and an EF1 on June 24, 2010.
