About Tornadoes in North Stamford

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

North Stamford occupies the hilly, wooded northern reaches of Stamford in Fairfield County, close to Connecticut's border with New York, and the tornadoes that have touched this corner of southwestern Connecticut cluster heavily in the humid heart of summer.

An F2 on July 10, 1989 cut a half-mile path roughly 100 yards wide, injuring five people and causing $27.5 million in property damage. Decades earlier, an F2 on July 14, 1950 tracked five miles and injured three people, and July 1971 produced F2 tornadoes on both the 19th and the 29th. An F0 on June 12, 1991 proved deadly despite its modest rating, killing one person along a 0.7-mile path.

The area has also seen long-tracked storms: an F2 on July 12, 2006 traveled 10.1 miles with a path up to 300 yards wide and injured six people, while an EF1 on July 25, 2010 injured seven along a much shorter track. Later seasons brought an EF2 on May 15, 2018 that carved a 1.18-mile path and did $250,000 in damage, with an EF1 confirmed the same day; EF1 tornadoes followed on October 2, 2018, and an EF0 touched down on August 4, 2020. Spring and early autumn events appear in the record as well, but midsummer remains the season when this area has most often seen tornadoes form.
