North Haven sits in the Quinnipiac River valley of south-central Connecticut, in New Haven County just north of the city of New Haven, and its tornado history is largely a summer story: warm-season thunderstorms moving across the valley have spun up tornadoes here again and again in July and August.
On July 10, 1989, an F4 tornado carved a 3-mile path 100 yards wide, injuring 40 people and causing $275,000,000 in property damage; an F2 struck the same day along a 5-mile track, injuring 70 more. Decades earlier, on May 24, 1962, an F3 killed one person and injured 50 as it tracked 11.6 miles across the area, and on August 21, 1951, an F2 traveled 43.9 miles while an F3 touched down that same day.
The modern era has stayed active in gentler form: an EF1 on May 16, 2007, EF1 tornadoes on July 21, 2010, EF1s again on May 15, 2018, and an EF0 alongside an EF1 on August 27, 2020.
