Newington lies in Hartford County, in the lowlands of central Connecticut just south of Hartford, and the tornado history of this stretch of the Connecticut River valley runs from brief EF0 touchdowns to violent, deadly storms.
An F4 struck on October 3, 1979, carving an 11.3-mile path as much as 1,400 yards wide; it killed 3 people, injured 500, and caused $275 million in property damage. Another F4 hit on July 10, 1989, injuring 40 along a 3-mile track, while an F2 the same day injured 70.
