About Tornadoes in New Haven

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

New Haven sits on Long Island Sound in south-central Connecticut, and the humid, unstable air of late spring and summer has driven most of the area's tornado weather. On May 24, 1962, an F3 tornado cut an 11.6-mile path through the area, killing one person, injuring 50, and causing $2.75 million in damage.

Two tornadoes struck the region on July 10, 1989: an F4 that tore a three-mile path, injuring 40 people and causing $275 million in property damage, and an F2 that tracked five miles and injured 70. Other strong summer tornadoes include an F3 on July 29, 1971, and F2s on June 12, 1973, September 18, 1973, and July 5, 1984.

More recent events have generally been weaker but persistent. An EF1 touched down on May 16, 2007, and two EF1 tornadoes struck on May 15, 2018. August 27, 2020 brought both an EF0 and an EF1 to the area, and a pair of EF0 tornadoes on November 13, 2021 showed that Connecticut's tornado threat can extend well into autumn, long after the summer thunderstorm season has faded.
