Naugatuck lies in the Naugatuck River valley of western New Haven County, Connecticut, and the tornadoes that have touched this area have come overwhelmingly in the warm months, from late May through August, with occasional cool-season strays such as an F2 on October 24, 1955.
July 10, 1989 brought a violent day to the region: an F4 tornado carved a 3-mile path, injuring 40 people and causing $275,000,000 in property damage, while F2 tornadoes also struck that same day, one of them injuring 70 people along a 5-mile track. Decades earlier, on May 24, 1962, an F3 tornado killed one person and injured 50 as it tracked 11.6 miles, causing $2,750,000 in damage. Long paths are not unknown here even from lesser-rated storms: an F2 on August 21, 1951 traveled 43.9 miles and injured nine people.
