Montville Center sits in New London County in southeastern Connecticut, in the wooded hills west of the Thames River, and the communities around it have felt tornadoes for generations — mostly in the heart of summer, with a handful of striking autumn exceptions.
On July 12, 1950, an F2 tornado tracked roughly 10 miles through the area on a path only about 10 yards wide, causing $2,750 in property damage. The following summer brought a more intense storm: on August 21, 1951, an F3 tornado injured 8 people and caused $275,000 in damage despite a compact path just a tenth of a mile long.
