Milford sits on Long Island Sound in New Haven County, and the tornadoes that have touched this corner of coastal Connecticut have come overwhelmingly in the heart of summer, when humid air pushing inland off the Sound feeds severe afternoon thunderstorms.
On July 10, 1989, a violent F4 tornado tore a three-mile path roughly 100 yards wide through the area, injuring 40 people and causing $275 million in property damage; an F2 the same day tracked five miles and injured 70 more. Decades earlier, on May 24, 1962, a deadly F3 carved an 11.6-mile track through the region, killing one person, injuring 50, and leaving $2.75 million in damage. Summer trouble reaches back at least to July 14, 1950, when an F2 ran five miles and injured three people.
