The area has seen some forceful storms. On June 9, 1953, an F3 carved a 28-mile path up to 667 yards wide through the region, injuring 17 people and causing $2.75 million in property damage. On August 7, 1986, an F2 tore along a four-mile track that widened to 1,000 yards, injuring 20 and likewise leaving $2.75 million in damage.

On June 1, 2011, a deadly EF3 tracked 37.58 miles with a width of 880 yards, killing three people, injuring 200, and causing $227.6 million in property damage; an EF0 also touched down in the area that same day.
