On July 10, 1989, an F4 tornado tore a three-mile path roughly 100 yards wide through the area, injuring 40 people and causing $275 million in property damage. Decades earlier, on May 24, 1962, an F3 tracked 11.6 miles through the region, killing one person, injuring 50, and inflicting $2,750,000 in damage. Another F3 struck on August 21, 1951, injuring eight, and on August 8, 1999 an F2 carved a four-mile path up to 300 yards wide.
