Southern New England's tornadoes are born of collisions: cool, dry air pressing east off the continental interior meets humid Atlantic moisture riding up the coast, and the Connecticut River Valley gives that conflict a corridor. Glastonbury sits on the east bank of this lowland, where the valley's north-to-south channel can funnel warm, unstable air beneath approaching disturbances while the traprock ridges and eastern hills help focus the boundaries along which thunderstorms organize.
That geography has produced violent results. An F4 tornado swept down the valley on October 3, 1979, carving a track roughly eleven miles long, killing three people and injuring about five hundred. Earlier, on May 24, 1962, an F3 tracked nearly twelve miles through the area, killing one person and injuring fifty. An F2 on July 10, 1989 hurt seventy people along a five-mile path. Weaker touchdowns have continued in the modern era, including an EF1 on July 1, 2013 and an EF0 on June 21, 2024.
