Farmington sits in the Farmington River valley of Hartford County, in central Connecticut, and the tornadoes around it have mostly come on humid, unstable summer days in June, July, and August — though some of the area's memorable events have arrived in spring and autumn.
An F4 tornado struck on October 3, 1979, killing 3 people, injuring 500, and cutting an 11.3-mile path as much as 1,400 yards wide, with property damage put at $275 million. A decade later, on July 10, 1989, another F4 crossed the region and injured 40 people, while an F2 the same day injured 70 more. Earlier generations saw violent weather too: an F3 on May 24, 1962 killed 1 person and injured 50 along an 11.6-mile track, and on August 21, 1951 an F2 traveled 43.9 miles and injured 9 people, with an F3 injuring 8 that same day.
In more recent years, EF1 tornadoes touched down on July 21, 2010, and again on May 15, 2018. Tornadoes rated EF0 and EF1 struck on August 27, 2020, an EF0 followed on November 13, 2021 — proof that tornadoes here can arrive well past summer — and an EF0 touched down on June 21, 2024.
