East Haven sits on Long Island Sound in New Haven County, just east of New Haven, and the tornadoes documented around the city have arrived most often in July and August, when humid summer air surges across southern Connecticut.
On July 10, 1989, an F4 tornado carved a 3-mile path 100 yards wide, injuring 40 people and causing $275 million in property damage. An F2 struck the same day, tracking 5 miles, injuring 70 more, and doing $27.5 million in damage — two destructive tornadoes hitting the area within a single day.
Decades earlier, on May 24, 1962, a deadly F3 traveled 11.6 miles, killing one person and injuring 50 along its track. Another F3 struck on July 29, 1971; its path covered barely a tenth of a mile, yet it injured two people and caused $275,000 in damage.
