About Tornadoes in Darien

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Darien sits on Long Island Sound in Fairfield County, in Connecticut's southwestern corner, and the tornadoes that have passed near town cluster heavily in the humid heart of summer, from June through September.

An F2 tornado struck on July 14, 1950, injuring three people and causing $275,000 in property damage along a five-mile path. Another F2 touched down on July 19, 1971, and on July 12, 2006 an F2 tracked 10.1 miles with a path as wide as 300 yards, injuring six people. Weaker tornadoes here have been dangerous too: an F0 on June 12, 1991 killed one person along a 0.7-mile track, and F0 activity on June 29, 1990 injured seven. On September 16, 2010, an EF1 killed one person, injured another, and caused $17,200,000 in damage along a four-mile path.

The shoulder seasons have produced tornadoes as well. A pair of EF1s touched down on October 2, 2018, followed by an EF0 on October 3, and an EF0 arrived late in the year on November 13, 2021. An EF1 also came early in the season, on May 16, 2007 — a reminder that along this stretch of the Connecticut coast, tornado weather can arrive well outside midsummer.
