About Tornadoes in Danbury

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Danbury occupies the hill country of Fairfield County in western Connecticut, near the New York border, and tornadoes here have overwhelmingly been warm-season storms, clustering from May through August with occasional autumn outliers.

The mid-twentieth century brought several significant strikes to the area. An F2 on August 21, 1951 tracked 43.9 miles and caused $275,000 in property damage. On May 24, 1962, an F3 tornado killed one person and injured 50 along an 11.6-mile path, leaving $2,750,000 in damage. A single day, July 29, 1971, produced both an F2 and an F3 nearby, and on July 10, 1989 an F2 injured 70 people along a five-mile track while causing $27,500,000 in property damage.

Later decades kept the pattern going. An F2 on July 12, 2006 ran 10.1 miles with a path as wide as 300 yards, injuring six people. On May 15, 2018, an EF2 caused $250,000 in damage along a 1.18-mile path while EF1 tornadoes touched down in the area the same day, and EF1s returned that fall on October 2, 2018. EF0 and EF1 tornadoes followed in August 2020, an EF0 in April 2021, and another EF0 on August 13, 2023 — a reminder that even in southern New England, Danbury-area residents see tornado-producing storms often enough to take warnings seriously.
