Cheshire sits in New Haven County, among the low hills and river valleys of central Connecticut, and its tornado history is concentrated in the heart of summer. On July 10, 1989, an F4 tornado tore a 3-mile path 100 yards wide through the area, injuring 40 people and causing $275 million in property damage; F2 tornadoes that same day added to the toll, one of them injuring 70 people along a 5-mile track.
That afternoon was not an isolated brush with violent weather. On May 24, 1962, an F3 killed one person and injured 50 along an 11.6-mile path, causing $2.75 million in damage. A generation earlier, on August 21, 1951, an F2 ground out a 43.9-mile path and injured nine people, while an F3 the same day injured eight more.
Recent decades have leaned toward weaker but persistent activity: EF1 tornadoes touched down repeatedly on July 21, 2010, EF1s struck again on May 15, 2018, and an EF0 was confirmed as recently as June 21, 2024.
