Derecho — The Inland Hurricane: How a Line of Storms Wrecks a 500-Mile Swath

What is a derecho?

A derecho is a widespread, long-lived windstorm produced by a rapidly moving complex of thunderstorms — by the traditional definition, a nearly continuous swath of wind damage at least 240 miles (about 400 km) long, with gusts of 58+ mph along most of it and embedded gusts of 75+ mph. (SPC's modern working definition is stricter still — on the order of 400 miles long and 60 miles wide.) The word is Spanish for "straight," coined in 1888 by Iowa physicist Gustavus Hinrichs as the straight-line counterpart to the rotating "tornado." Derechos earn their "inland hurricane" nickname honestly: the August 10, 2020 Midwest derecho carried estimated 140 mph gusts across Iowa and became the costliest thunderstorm event in US history at over $11 billion.

How does a derecho work?

The engine is a self-sustaining loop inside a mesoscale convective system (a large organized storm complex). Storms build a pool of rain-cooled air; the cold pool's leading edge (gust front) plows up fresh warm air, firing new storms; a rear-inflow jet — dry mid-level air accelerating into the system's back side — descends and slams momentum into the surface. On radar the line bulges into bow echoes where the jet is strongest, and embedded mesovortices along the bow produce the most extreme pockets of damage (plus brief spin-up tornadoes).

When the loop locks in over a favorable corridor — typically along a hot, humid air mass boundary with strong steering winds — the system can sustain 60-70 mph forward speed for 8-12+ hours, unrolling wind damage continuously for hundreds of miles. That persistence, not peak gust, is what makes a derecho a derecho.

When and where do derechos happen?

The classic warm-season derecho (May-August) rides the northern rim of a heat dome — the "ring of fire" pattern — with corridors from the upper Midwest through the Ohio Valley and from the southern Plains eastward. Roughly one derecho per year affects any given point in the most-favored belt from Iowa through Indiana. Cool-season derechos, driven by powerful jet-stream dynamics rather than heat, are less common but move even faster — the December 15, 2021 Plains/Midwest event reached the Great Lakes at 100 mph forward speed.

Landmark events calibrate the range: the June 29, 2012 Ohio Valley-to-Mid-Atlantic derecho (700 miles in 12 hours, 22 deaths, multi-day power outages for millions in the DC area) and the August 10, 2020 Iowa derecho (140 mph estimated peak gusts, roughly a third of Iowa's corn crop flattened, $11+ billion). How is a derecho different from a tornado or a hurricane?

Against a tornado: rotation versus translation. Tornado winds rotate around a small core and carve a narrow path; derecho winds blow overwhelmingly in one direction across a front tens of miles wide, and the damage footprint is thousands of times larger even though peak winds are lower. (Derechos do contain tornadoes — brief QLCS spin-ups along the line — so the two aren't mutually exclusive.)

Against a hurricane: duration and warning horizon. Hurricane-force winds in a derecho last minutes to an hour at a point, not the many hours of a landfalling hurricane, and derechos assemble in hours rather than the days of satellite-tracked hurricane approach. The "inland hurricane" experience is real — 90 mph winds, regional power grid destruction — but compressed, and with lead times measured in tens of minutes at each point, not days.

How are derechos warned?

Through the severe thunderstorm warning chain, at its most aggressive settings. SPC often flags derecho potential in outlooks a day or more out (a High risk driven by wind probabilities is the signature) and issues PDS severe thunderstorm watches for the corridor. As the line matures, local offices issue successive warnings with considerable and destructive tags — the destructive tier triggering WEA phone alerts — and the bowing structure is trackable on radar for hours, so downstream towns often have 30-60 minutes of effective notice. The failure mode isn't detection; it's the public reading "severe thunderstorm warning" as routine while a 100 mph wall of wind closes at a mile a minute.

What should I do when a derecho is inbound?

Treat it as a tornado-grade shelter event with a wider net: get into a sturdy building, to an interior room away from windows — the same room you'd use for a tornado — and assume trees and power lines will come down regionally (charge devices, expect multi-day outages in a direct hit). Get vehicles under cover if there's time, and get yourself off roads, campgrounds, and water well before arrival: most derecho deaths are vehicles, campers, and boaters caught by the gust front.
