How much warning do you get before a tornado?

The national average lead time for a tornado warning is roughly 8 to 10 minutes — the gap between the National Weather Service issuing the warning and the tornado reaching a given point. The spread around that average is wide: long-track supercell tornadoes tracked on radar can carry 30-45 minutes of lead time for towns downstream, while brief spin-up tornadoes in squall lines sometimes touch down with little or no warning at all. Lead time is also consumed by delivery — the seconds to minutes it takes a warning to reach your phone, radio, or siren — and by your own reaction time. The purpose of every alerting decision you make is to hand more of those minutes to the part that matters: getting to shelter.

What does "lead time" actually measure?

Lead time is measured from the moment the NWS issues a tornado warning to the moment the tornado affects a given location inside it. It's a per-location number, not a per-storm number: a warning issued as a tornado crosses a polygon's western edge might give the first town 2 minutes and a town at the eastern edge 25.

Averages depend on how you count events with zero lead time (tornadoes that strike before any warning), which is why you'll see figures from 8 to 15 minutes quoted from official sources. The honest summary: expect about ten minutes, plan for less, and treat anything more as a gift.

Why do some tornadoes get 30 minutes of warning and others get none?

The spread comes from how tornadoes form:

  • Classic supercell tornadoes — the Plains outbreak type — develop from a rotating mesocyclone that Doppler radar can watch strengthen for tens of minutes before touchdown. Forecasters often warn on the radar signature before a tornado exists, and downstream towns of a long-track tornado can get 30-45 minutes.
  • QLCS ("squall line") tornadoes — common in the South and in cool-season events — spin up in minutes inside a fast-moving line of storms. Radar may show the circulation for only one or two scans before touchdown. These produce most of the near-zero lead time cases, and they're disproportionately nocturnal.
  • Radar geometry matters too: the radar beam rises with distance, so a distant storm's low-level rotation can be literally below the radar's view. A tornado 100+ miles from the nearest radar gets warned later than one 20 miles away.

Where do my minutes go after the warning is issued?

Issuance is the start of a relay race. The warning must be transmitted (near-instant), delivered to you (seconds to minutes depending on channel — WEA broadcast, app push queues, siren activation policy, a phone call placed within the minute), noticed by you (instant if awake and audible; potentially never if asleep with a silenced phone), interpreted ("is this my area?"), and finally acted on. Households that have practiced can be in shelter in under two minutes; an unprepared household debating in the hallway can burn the entire lead time deciding.

Is lead time getting better?

Warning skill improved dramatically with the Doppler radar rollout in the 1990s and dual-polarization upgrades in the 2010s. Since then, average lead time has plateaued — partly because the NWS also works to keep false alarms down, and the two goals trade against each other: warn earlier on weaker evidence and you warn wrong more often.

The research frontier is NOAA's Warn-on-Forecast program, which aims to warn from rapidly-updating storm-scale models rather than waiting for rotation on radar — with a goal of pushing usable lead times toward 30-60 minutes for significant tornadoes. Elements of it already inform experimental products, but operational warnings today remain primarily detection-based.

How should I plan around a 10-minute average?

Design your response to fit inside the short end of the distribution, not the average. That means deciding tonight, not during the warning: where your shelter spot is, how you'll hear a warning while asleep, and — if you live in a mobile home — where the sturdy building you'll move to is and how long it takes to reach, because that move generally needs to happen at the watch stage, before any warning exists.
