For Stillwater, May 4, 1999 remains a dividing line: an F4 tornado carved a thirty-five-mile path through the area that day, killing two people and injuring twenty-six. The setting made such a storm possible long before it arrived. Each spring, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico streams north across central Oklahoma and meets the dryline edging east off the high plains; when a vigorous jet stream passes overhead, that collision of moisture, lift, and wind shear can spin ordinary thunderstorms into rotating supercells.
The archive kept by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center shows how far back the story runs. An F2 damaged property near town on April 3, 1950, and another F2 injured two people on April 30, 1970. June 13, 1975 brought an F3 that injured eight, and an F3 on May 16, 1990 killed a resident and injured twelve.
