Systematic weather observation around Moore has continued since mid-century, and the tornado record built across those decades — maintained by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center — reflects the city's exposed seat on the central Oklahoma plains. The terrain offers storms little resistance: gentle, open ground south of the Canadian River, unbroken by mountain barriers, lets humid Gulf of Mexico air stream north at the surface while drier air slides east off the High Plains above it. Where those layered air masses collide along the dryline, rotating thunderstorms can organize rapidly, and spring afternoons in April and May supply ample fuel.
That geography has left repeated marks on the city. An F4 tornado carved a 59.2-mile path through the area on May 2, 1954, injuring 65 people. The 1970s proved turbulent as well: an F4 on May 24, 1973, killed 2 people, and an F3 on November 20, 1973, killed 5 and injured 36, a reminder that autumn outbreaks reach central Oklahoma too. On May 3, 1999, an F5 tore a 37-mile track past Moore, killing 36 people and injuring 583.
