Muskogee occupies low, rolling ground where the Verdigris and Grand rivers join the Arkansas, on the western fringe of the Ozark foothills in eastern Oklahoma. That valley setting places the city in the path of springtime clashes between Gulf of Mexico moisture streaming north and drier, cooler air dropping in behind the dryline that sharpens across the plains to the west. When a strong jet stream overspreads those contrasts, rotating thunderstorms can develop quickly, and the season tends to follow a rhythm: activity builds through spring, eases in the heat of summer, and can return in fall and even early winter as the jet dips south again.
The tornado history kept by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center reflects that rhythm. On May 26, 1973, an F4 tornado tore across the edge of Muskogee, killing five people and injuring twenty-five. On April 27, 1984, an F3 carved a path roughly twenty-two miles long and about a mile wide, leaving eight dead and ninety-five hurt. The cool-season side of the pattern showed itself on December 1, 2018, when an EF2 tracked some forty-seven miles across the region and injured five people, and again on October 11, 2021, when an EF1 moved through the area.
