May 3, 1999 remains seared into Edmond's memory: that evening an F5 tornado carved a 37-mile track through the southern side of the metro area, killing 36 people and injuring 583. The setting helps explain such a day. Edmond occupies gently rolling ground where the Cross Timbers oak belt thins into open prairie north of Oklahoma City, and the terrain does little to disrupt the airmasses that collide above it. Humid Gulf of Mexico air streams north across this low country, dry air spills eastward off the High Plains to sharpen the dryline, and jet-stream disturbances aloft supply the wind shear that lets supercells rotate — a combination that ripens in spring.
The NOAA Storm Prediction Center's archive for the Edmond area shows the hazard spanning every era from the 1950s onward. A long-track F3 crossed the region on November 20, 1973, killing 5 people along a 24.2-mile path. On May 24, 2011, an EF5 traveled 63.1 miles through central Oklahoma, killing 9 and injuring 181. And on May 20, 2013, an EF5 nearly 1,900 yards wide struck just to the south, killing 24, injuring 212, and causing about 2 billion dollars in damage.
