Seen from the Garfield County vantage point, Enid's tornado story is inseparable from its geography: the county spreads across open wheat plains in north-central Oklahoma, where humid Gulf air surging up from the south collides with the dryline edging east off the High Plains. When a strong spring jet stream overlays that boundary, supercells can organize quickly and travel long distances over flat terrain. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center's database of local events stretches from the 1950s into the 2020s, and its entries lean heavily toward spring, when moisture, wind shear, and instability come together here.
The violent chapters define local memory. On March 16, 1965, an F4 tornado traced an 82.7-mile path through the area, injuring 7 people. On May 2, 1979, another F4 carved a 20.6-mile track roughly 880 yards wide, killing 1 person and injuring 25. April 26, 1991 brought an F4 that stayed on the ground for about 66 miles and swelled to nearly 1,500 yards across, injuring 6. On May 4, 1999, an F4 near Enid killed 1 person and injured 11.
