Across the lower Mississippi Valley, severe weather keeps an unusual calendar: warm, humid Gulf of Mexico air is available for much of the year, so when jet-stream disturbances dig south — in spring, and again in late autumn and early winter — rotating thunderstorms can develop quickly. Vicksburg, on the loess bluffs above the Mississippi River, sits squarely inside that pattern, its tornado threat cresting in spring and returning in a distinct cool-season window around November and December.
That rhythm runs through the local history compiled by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center. On December 5, 1953, an F5 tornado tore across Vicksburg itself, leaving 38 dead and 270 injured. On March 4, 1966, another F5 swept the region along a 202.5-mile path, causing 58 deaths and 518 injuries. An F4 crossed the area on February 21, 1971, killing 13 people and injuring 182. On April 24, 2010, an EF4 passed close to the city, with 10 deaths and 146 injuries along its track.
