Biloxi's severe-weather calendar runs on a split schedule. April and May bring cold fronts that pull humid Gulf of Mexico air over coastal Mississippi and send squall lines ashore, while late summer and autumn open a different door, when tropical systems moving inland spin up brief tornadoes in their rainbands. Perched on the Mississippi Sound, the city draws instability straight off warm offshore water, so a decaying hurricane can be as productive a tornado-maker here as a springtime front. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center's record for the Biloxi area reflects that split, with activity reaching from the 1950s into the 2020s.
The autumn side of that rhythm has hit hard. An F3 tornado struck on October 30, 1967, cutting a short but wide swath that killed 4 people, injured 17, and left tens of millions of dollars in damage. Spring has answered in kind: an F3 on April 13, 1980 tracked nearly sixteen miles and injured 25 people, and on the same calendar date in 1994 an F2 killed 2 residents and injured 16.
