Canton sits in the foothills of northwestern Georgia, in the wooded, rolling country at the southern edge of the Appalachians within the northern reach of the Atlanta metropolitan area. This part of the Southeast is prone to tornadoes, and its hilly, tree-covered terrain can conceal one until it is close.
The area's tornado risk draws on plentiful moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.
