Humid air drawn north from the Gulf of Mexico does the heavy lifting for tornado weather around Augusta; add an advancing front and strong wind shear aloft, and storms over the Savannah River corridor can begin to rotate. The local history shows it decade after decade. An F1 tornado tracked near the city on August 17, 1954, and on May 9, 1978, another F1 stayed on the ground for 38.6 miles. On May 8, 1998, an F3 crossed a 12-mile stretch of the area, killing one person and injuring nine. On April 11, 2009, a family of EF3 tornadoes swept through, one of them tracking 26.33 miles and injuring four people, and an EF3 carved a 37.88-mile path on April 13, 2020. An EF1 followed on May 12, 2025.
