The tornado history handed down in Americus reaches back to April 18, 1953, when an F2 crossed the edge of town along a brief track and injured one person. A far longer F2 followed on December 5, 1954, traveling roughly 71 miles and leaving one person dead and 35 injured. April 1971 brought tornadoes on consecutive days: an F3 and an F2 on April 23, 1971, then another F3 on April 24, 1971. An F3 injured 28 people on April 15, 1999. On March 2, 2007, an EF3 carved a path some 40 miles long, killing two people, injuring 11, and causing damage estimated near 111 million dollars. An EF1 on April 3, 2017 damaged property along a track of about five miles.
