Sherrelwood sits in Adams County on the north side of the Denver metropolitan area, where the urbanized Front Range corridor meets the open High Plains. Tornado activity around the community clusters heavily in late May, June, and July, when storms build over the foothills and push east across the plains.
On June 3, 1981, an F2 tornado carved a 2.3-mile path up to 133 yards wide through the area, injuring 42 people and causing $27,500,000 in property damage; a second F2 the same day caused $2,750,000 in damage. June 15, 1988 brought another destructive day, when an F3 tracked 2.5 miles with a width of 200 yards, injuring 7 people and causing $27,500,000 in damage, and an F2 touched down the same day. F3 tornadoes have struck in other years as well: one on May 18, 1975 traveled 4.1 miles and spread to 440 yards wide, and another on June 12, 1982 ran 3 miles.
Tornadoes have continued into recent decades. An EF2 on June 7, 2021 tracked 7.5 miles and caused $530,500 in damage, an EF1 touched down on June 22, 2023, and tornadoes were again reported near the community in June and July of 2025.
