Aurora spreads across the High Plains just east of Denver, spanning Arapahoe, Adams, and Douglas counties, in a corridor where air converging along the Front Range urban corridor spins up tornadoes through late spring and summer. Most of the city's tornadoes have come in weak, brief form between late May and early August, but the plains around town have also seen serious storms.
An F2 struck on June 3, 1981, injuring 42 people and causing $27.5 million in property damage along a 2.3-mile path. On June 15, 1988, an F3 carved a 2.5-mile path up to 200 yards wide, injuring 7 and likewise causing $27.5 million in damage. Earlier, an F3 on May 18, 1975 traveled 4.1 miles with a width of 440 yards, and another F3 tracked 3 miles on June 12, 1982. On July 14, 1996, an F2 stayed on the ground for 12 miles east of the metro area.
The threat persists in the modern era. May 18, 2025 brought a burst of tornadoes to the Aurora area, including an EF2 that tracked 4.44 miles with a width of 400 yards, and an EF1 touched down on July 14, 2025. The season can also stretch beyond summer here — an F1 arrived as late as October 4, 2004.
