Loveland sits in Larimer County, where Colorado's Front Range foothills flatten into the high plains, and its tornado history mirrors that setting: local events cluster in late spring and early summer, when upslope moisture meets plains storm systems east of the mountains.
On May 22, 2008, an EF3 tornado tracked 38.69 miles on a path up to 1,760 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 78 others, and causing $147 million in property damage; an EF1 touched down in the area the same day. Strong tornadoes have recurred since: an EF3 carved a 6.71-mile path on June 5, 2015, and an EF2 stayed on the ground for 7.5 miles on June 7, 2021, causing $530,500 in damage.
The earlier Fujita-scale era tells a similar early-summer story. An F2 tracked 9.1 miles on May 30, 1957; June 4, 1976 brought a burst of tornadoes that included F2 damage; and on June 10, 1990, an F2 ran 23 miles across the area.
